What is an e-Visa and how long is it valid to use?

An e-Visa is an electronic travel permit to enter Kenya. A single Entry Visa is valid for travel with 3 months from the date of issue. A multiple entry visa is valid for 3 to 12 months from the date of issue.

How long can I stay in Kenia with e-Visa?

e-Visa authorizes you to short-term stay in Kenia for up to 90 days.

At which border crossings can I use e-Visa?

An e-visa authorizes entry into Kenya only at the following national border crossings:

Air checkpoints: JKIA Nairobi, Wajir Airport, Wilson Airport Nairobi, MIA Mombasa, KIA Kisumu, Malindi Airport, Lamu Airport, EIA Eldoret, Garisa Airstrip, Lokichogio Airport, Isiolo Airport

Land checkpoints: Muhuru Bay, Lunga Lunga, Taveta, Namanga, Isebania, Busia, Malaba, Loitokitok, Moyale, Mandera, Nadapal, Liboi, Lwakhakha, Suam

Naval checkpoints: Old Port Mombasa, Kilindini Sea Port, Lamu Port, Malindi Port, Kisumu Port, Shimoni Port, Muhuru Bay, Mbita Point, Vanga Port, Kiunga Port

Can I extend my stay?

Only singe entry visa may be renewed. Your stay period may be extended for a further 90 days through eFNS - Foreign Nationals Services Portal.

What do I need to apply and how does it work?

To apply for an e-Visa, you must be outside Kenya, you must have a valid passport, an email address and a valid credit/debit card. All you need to do is submit the application, pay the fee and wait for the result to be delivered to your email address. We recommend checking your email 48 hours after submitting the form.

What is the whole process of applying for an e-visa like?

1. Fill out the online form according to your passport information and upload your photo. Some additional information is also required.
2. Click the "Submit the application" button to complete the e-Visa application process. You will be redirected to the summary page.
3. The final step is to pay the application service fee. Provide the required information and click "Pay" to complete the procedure.
4. Once payment is confirmed, a confirmation of your e-Visa application is sent to your email address.
5. E-visa application successfully completed!
6. Once you have paid for your application, if approved, you will receive your e-Visa sent to the email address you provided on the form.

Can I apply for e-Visa if I am travelling with a Group Tour?

Yes. Group Tours can also apply for online e-Visa.

Can I submit a group application?

No, you can't include others in your application. A separate application must be made for each traveller.

Can I submit an e-Visa application for another person?

Anybody can fill and submit an e-Visa application for anybody else if that person previously agreed or in case of the parent or legal guardian applying on behalf of the minor

Is it necessary to complete all required information in the application?

Yes. You must complete all required information to be eligible to receive an e-Visa.

Do I need a ticket before I apply for an e-Visa?

No, e-Visa can be obtained even before booking your ticket. It is recommended to apply for e-Visa at least 2 weeks before the departure

I do not know the exact date of departure yet. What date should I select on the application form?

The departure date specified on the application form may be approximate. If this is the case, please provide your most likely departure date. Remember that the visa is valid for use within 90 days of approval, so the approximate departure date should be very similar to the exact date. If you are unsure of the month of departure, we recommend that you do not submit the form.

Are there age restrictions in applying?

No. Eligible passport holders of any age can apply for an e-Visa. Note: Children under the age of sixteen do not need to apply for e-Visa.

Can I include my children in the same online e-Visa application?

No. All family members must make separate e-Visa applications. Even if your children travel with your passport, they will need an individual e-Visa application.

What if my name is too long or includes special characters?

What if my name is too long or includes special characters?

Enter your full name as it appears in the ICAO line of your passport data page at the bottom of the passport identity page (two rows including your encrypted data).

How long does it take to obtain an e-Visa?

Once the application is submitted with the complete information, it will be processed within the shortest possible time. An e-Visa is usually processed within 4 working days after receiving the completed application and full e-Visa fee.

What can I do if I make a mistake on my application?

Applicants are responsible for the correctness of all information submitted during the application process. The most important data in the application is passport details:
• Full Name
• Nationality
• Passport number
• Gender
• Birth date
• Email address
You do not need to update your application if information other than above is incorrect.

I entered my information incorrectly (Full Name/Nationality/Passport number/Gender/Birth date/Email address). Could I modify it?

It is important that you are very careful when you enter your personal details. However, if you have entered one or more of this information incorrectly you need to contact us as soon as possible. If you find out later that you have made a mistake, and your e-Visa is already issued there is no possibility to update its data. In that case, you need to re-apply. Note that obtaining a new e-Visa in that situation involves longer than usual processing time.

My credit card number is correct, but it was not accepted by your system. Why?

Most payment problems are due to security measures by issuing banks, payment gateway or issues with the card itself. Firstly verify the correctness of all provided card details: the number, expiry date, and CVV code. If all data are correct and the payment is still unsuccessful check your online payment limits. If you have the ability to use a different card, please try to pay using that card. Remember that you don't need to use a card of the same name as the applicant name provided in the form.

What is the minimum passport validity required to apply for an e-Visa?

The passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of submission of the e-Visa application.

I have an eligible passport, but nationality noted in the document is different than the country of issue. Can I apply for e-Visa?

No, you cannot apply using a non-citizen passport, certificate of identity or other travel documents.

If I have more than one passport, can I apply for the Visa using the particulars from the first passport and then travel with the second passport?

No, travellers are required to travel with the passport for which e-Visa is issued for.

My nationality is not on the list. Can I apply for e-Visa?

No, you cannot apply if your nationality is not on the list. It means you are not eligible to apply for e-Visa and you need a different type of entry permit.

Do I need to renew my e-Visa if my passport has changed or expired?

Your e-Visa is linked to the passport number you used in the application, and you should use the same passport to be able to travel to Kenia. If you get a new passport, you are required to submit a new application using the new passport data to obtain the new travel authorization. Otherwise, you will be denied to enter the country.

How do I receive my e-Visa Approval Letter?

Once the application is approved, the e-Visa approval letter is sent directly to the email address provided by the applicant. 

How will I know if my e-Visa application requires further processing?

You will be notified by email if your application requires additional processing. In this case, you will be asked to attach other additional documents.

Do I need to print out the visa?

Yes, you will need to print out your visa in colour prior to departure. You should carry a copy of your e-Visa with you so that you can visually present it to the transport company representatives when you board your vehicle, and also present it upon arrival to confirm your eligibility to enter Kenya.

I can’t find my approved visa. What should I do?

Please make sure first that the email with your visa has not been directed to the spam folder. If you don't see a message with the visa, please contact us using the contact form available on our website (be sure to include the application number).

Four working days passed and my application is still processed. What should I do?

Sometimes the application may be processed longer than usual, but there is no need to worry about. In some cases, Kenyan Immigration Department may require additional information and documents to upload. If necessary, our consultant will contact you via email.

Why am I not receiving emails from the Department?

To ensure you receive emails from the Department:
• make sure that the email you use is still valid
• check your email storage capacity is not full
• check your email spam scanner will accept emails from our domain
• check your email spam folder on a regular basis to ensure messages from us have not been incorrectly identified as spam
• check your application to ensure the email address you provided was entered correctly.

Can I contact any Embassy to check on the status of my e-Visa?

No. Embassies are not concerned with e-Visa issues. Check the status of your e-Visa online. Once your e-visa application is approved, an approval letter is sent directly to your email address.

I have already applied for a Tourist visa through an e-Visa online system. Can I change it to Business or other types?

No. Issued visa cannot be changed to other visa types.

If I use my e-Visa to enter Kenya, what do I have to do at the checkpoint?

At the checkpoint e-Visa holders should present a valid passport and e-Visa Approval Letter copy in colour.

Do I need to enter Kenya on the exact date specified in my e-Visa application?

No, you can enter Kenya on another day as long as your visa is still valid for entry. Be informed that e-Visa authorizes its holder to enter Kenya within 90 days of the approval date. In any case you must exit no later than the visa expiry date.

What if I already hold a current visa for travel to Kenia and I have already applied for new one (e.g. for second arrival at a later date)?

If you hold a current visa, which is still valid for use to enter Kenia, your new e-Visa shall be issued after the current one expires.

I am in Kenia and my current visa is coming to be expired. Can I apply for e-Visa to extend my stay?

Only singe entry visa may be renewed. Your stay period may be extended for a further 90 days through eFNS - Foreign Nationals Services Portal.

If my e-Visa is refused or unused, will my payment be refunded?

No. Payments for e-Visa applications are non-refundable.

How much is the service fee for e-Visa and how long its processing lasts for?

The service fee is €100 and includes all government costs. It is hard to estimate the unit processing time. This depends on the individual application and many other factors. The assurance of process service is four working days. Most of the application is processed within three working days, in the majority of cases, this usually lasts for less than two days. Note: extended processing time may occur in certain circumstances.

Do I need medical insurance to travel to Kenya?

All travelers are advised to purchase health and/or travel insurance before travelling to Kenya.

How safe are my credit card details?

My trip is delayed and my e-Visa is expired. Can you change my e-Visa validity date?

It is not possible to change the validity of the e-Visa. In this case, the application for a new e-Visa must be re-lodged.

What should I do if my e-Visa application is refused?

If your e-Visa application is refused, you can apply for a visa as per standard procedure at a diplomatic mission or consular office of Kenya. 

What are the photo requirements?

Photo requirements are as follows:
    • passport-type photograph
    • taken in the last six months
    • full face looking at the camera
    • well illuminated
    • color
    • sharp focus, not blurred
    • no flash reflection (especially when you wear glasses)
    • clear background with no shadows
    • neutral facial expression with both eyes open (eyes fully visible, no sunglasses)
    • no hat or head covering that obscures the hair or hairline unless worn daily for a religious purpose
    • all formats accepted
    • no size limits

What does it mean that the application is suspended?

The visa is only valid for 90 days and your entire stay must take place within the visa validity period. If your trip takes place after 90 days from today, the processing of your application is suspended until the first possible date of receipt of your visa so that it is valid both for entry into Kenya and for your entire stay. The processing of the application in such a case shall be suspended for a limited period in order to avoid the expiry of the visa during entry or stay in Kenya.

Can I change the port of arrival/departure?

No, you cannot change the port in your application. You may depart from any of the Kenyan Immigration Check Posts.
